New terror group “Lakurawa”emerges in Northwest Nigeria

(Vanguard) The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has raised the alarm over a new terror group, “Lakurawa,” reportedly active in the Northwest Nigerian states of Kebbi and Sokoto.

According to the ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur A. Muhammad-Baba, Lakurawa is accused of terrorizing communities, evicting security agents and local vigilantes, and imposing its own strict justice system.

Reports suggest the group’s members are primarily foreign nationals, speaking French and a form of Arabic, and are actively recruiting members with financial incentives or by force. In a recent attack on Argungu Local Government Area, the group allegedly killed 15 people.

The ACF expressed deep concern, stating, “The emergence of this group is both dangerous and alarming, indicating a further escalation in the devastating insecurity affecting the Northwest, now considered Nigeria’s epicenter of terrorism.” The group noted that Lakurawa’s rise coincides with increased efforts by the Nigerian military to combat banditry in the region, posing a significant national security threat.

The ACF urged Nigerian security agencies to take swift and decisive action to eliminate the group before it gains a foothold, warning against the passive response that allowed groups like Boko Haram to grow unchecked. The statement emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s national security strategies and tactics, as well as stronger collaboration through the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), urging Niger Republic to rejoin these efforts.

My Take

I remember during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, when General Azubuike Ihejirika was the Chief of Army Staff, he took a decisive step to eliminate Boko Haram but the likes of Buhari, Sultan of Sokoto, etc opposed Ihejirika, accusing him of coming with revenge agenda to eliminate the northerners. Then President Jonathan cowardly removed Ihejirika as the Chief of Army Staff.

Jonathan lost the election and Boko Haram continues to terrorize the north to date because the successive administration was passive in its response to the threat.

Today another terror group has emerged ....may God Almighty deliver his people.

Anthony Odiong, 55, faces two counts of second-degree sexual assault as well as one of first-degree sexual assault in the charges handed up against him recently in the McLennan county, Texas, state court.
