US ban on gun sales to adults under age 21 is unconstitutional, court rules

Image
By Reuters A selection of handguns are displayed at the Kittery Trading Post, Aug. 9, 2024, in Kittery, Maine.  A decades-old U.S. government ban on federally licensed firearms dealers selling handguns to adults under the age of 21 is unconstitutional, a U.S. appeals court held on Thursday, citing recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings expanding gun rights. The ruling by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals marked the first time a federal appeals court has held that the prohibition violated the right to keep and bear arms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment. The appeals court had previously upheld that same ban in 2012. But that was before the 6-3 conservative majority U.S. Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling in 2022 that established a new test for assessing modern firearms laws. In New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the Supreme Court held that modern gun restrictions were required to be "consistent with this nation...

Washington —  President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship in the U.S. has ignited a legal and political debate, raising questions about the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the extent of presidential power. The amendment guarantees citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil. “We're the only country in the world that does this with birthright, as you know. And it's just absolutely ridiculous. But, you know, we'll see. We think we have very good grounds and certain people have wanted to do this for decades,” Trump said while signing the executive order on his first day in office. The United States is one of about 30 countries that grant automatic citizenship to individuals born on their soil, including Brazil, Mexico, and Canada, among others. The...

Badenoch, who is the first black woman to lead a major UK party, made these comments during her first speech of the year at an event organized by Onward, a British think tank. She reflected on her personal experiences, saying, “And why does this matter so much to me? It’s because I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it. “I don’t want Britain to lose what it has. I grew up in a poor country and watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer, despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation.” Badenoch also shared her story of migrating to the UK at the age of 16 with her father’s last £100, seeking a better life. She emphasized, “So I have lived with the consequences of terrible governments that destroy lives, and I never, ever w...

Image
By Gistnews Nigeria’s former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has clarified that she is not connected to the $52.5 million that was recently brought back to the country from the United States of America (USA). However, in a statement issued on Sunday, Diezani, who has been residing in the United Kingdom (UK) since departing from Nigeria, asserted that the funds associated with her in the media as illicit gains actually belonged to Nigeria’s oil entrepreneur, Kola Aluko. Finally responding to the alleged recovery through her attorney, Mike Ozekhome SAN, Diezani maintained that the term “Diezani Loot” is unfounded, as she had no involvement in the circumstances surrounding the forfeiture of the funds by its rightful owner. Expressing her stance, the former minister stated that the $52.5 million originated from a vessel that was confiscated by the American authorities from Kola Aluko, which was subsequently sold, with the proceeds returned to the Nigerian federal g...

Shocking: Dunamis Church Miracles Are Fake Ex-Pastor Exposes

Image
By The Next Edition A former pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre (DIGC), Abraham Daniel, has alleged that the miracles performed by the church’s Senior Pastor, Paul Enenche, are not real. According to SaharaReporters, in an interview with Kaa Truths, Daniel outlined his reasons for leaving the church, citing frustration with what he described as the flawed approach to “healing and deliverance.” He claimed that after each healing and deliverance service, more people seeking healing would emerge than those who initially attended for it. He described the chaotic atmosphere of the services, likening it to the panic of a stadium crowd reacting to the presence of a dangerous animal. “When people see the crowd, they do the unthinkable. It’s like hearing there’s a lion nearby; even a crippled might jump the fence,” he said. Daniel further stated that the large crowds at Dunamis services often push people to act out of desperation. He continued: “I would tell you that healing is capit...

THE FUTILITY OF MATERIALISM

Image
By Ben Ahanonu Materialism, which borders on greed and selfishness, is one perennial plague that has bedeviled man from time immemorial. The dictionary defines it as the belief that money and possessions are more important than art, religion, moral beliefs etc. A careful examination of the circumstances that culminated in the development and emergence of imperialism will expose the materialistic driving force. During his last years of captivity, Napoleon, the French imperialist, who dreamt of conquering Europe and the world opined that: “Brute force has never attained anything durable.” This evergreen remark by Napoleon resonates to date. It should be recalled that it was with brute force, inspired by materialism, that the Romans held sway in the world for five centuries, yet everything they laboured to build disintegrated in the end. According to historical accounts, the industrial revolution enabled Europe and the United States of America to produce more goods than they could se...

The Houthis as Israel's next front

Image
By  nytimespost As we enter the New Year all eyes are once again drawn to the Middle East, where there has been no peace in this Season of Goodwill. Having comprehensively defeated Hezbollah in Lebanon and emasculated Hamas in Gaza, Israel now faces a shift in its strategic focus. With the defeat of these two major adversaries, Israel’s attention will inevitably turn to the threat posed by the Houthis in Yemen. The Houthis, an Iran-backed militia, have grown increasingly influential and aggressive, and their connection to Tehran amplifies their significance within the broader regional dynamics. Israel can now confront disrupting this new menace before it can gain any more momentum. The Houthis are not new players in the Middle East. A Zaydi Shia Islamist political and military organization that emerged in Yemen in the 1990s, their rise has been characterized by a mix of religious fervour, military savvy, and a complex set of alliances, most notably with Iran. Their arsenal is formi...

An interesting story: "We retired early and started traveling the world. We're not planning to leave money for our 6 kids" - Kelly Benthall

Image
By BUSINESS INSIDER AFRICA    When I was in my 40s, if you had told me I'd be writing this from Mauritius after months of traveling across Europe, I would have laughed. Kelly Benthall and her husband left Texas to retire early and travel the world.Kelly Benthall Kelly Benthall, 53, and her husband decided they wanted to retire early and travel the world. Part of the couple's plan for early retirement was not to leave an inheritance for their six kids. They've been traveling across Europe and Africa since August and are happy with the decision. Back then, I had a more traditional view of retirement: I would work until 65, leave a nest egg for my kids, and settle into a quieter life. But at 53, my husband, Nigel, and I quit our jobs in oil and gas, traded comfort for adventure, and hit the road. To retire early and travel, we restructured our finances and mapped out a plan to spend every penny. Deciding not to leave an inheritance for our six kids was a crucial part of the...
