Imo Police Command Orders Probe Into Viral Allegation Levelled Against Anti-Narcotics Unit Operatives By Actor, Young C

Young C said the officers arrested them and said that they would need N1.5 million to get themselves freed.

CP Aboki Danjuma, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, has directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police overseeing the IGP X-Squad to conduct a thorough probe into the damning allegations levelled against operatives of the Command’s Anti-Narcotics Unit and the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri by Young C Entertainment.

In the viral video, Young C said that on October 11, he and his crew travelled from Port Harcourt to Owerri for a movie shoot and were advised to use prop money while shooting his content due to security concerns. He said after they left the shoot, they were stopped and searched by men of the Anti-Narcotic unit and the prop money was found on them.

Young C said the officers arrested them and said that they would need N1.5 million to get themselves freed. The actor said all the explanations he gave to the officers that they were actors and had used the prop money while on set fell on deaf ears as the officers allegedly whisked them to their office and kept them in the cell for 24 hours.

He said the officers seized their phones and prevented them from contacting their family members, lawyers or even production crew members. He said his lawyer later came in for them and that the police demanded N300,000 before they would be released which he and his lawyer refused to give.

Young C further claimed that many Nigerians were being held up in the unit for frivolous reasons and called on the IGP to investigate the officers in the unit. He also threatened to take legal action against the officers who unlawfully arrested him and his crew members.

In a statement released, the state police command spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, said the Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation and has assured the general public that any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with the Force's regulations, and the supervising officer will also be sanctioned.

‘’Meanwhile, the complainant and his film production crew are encouraged to report at the IGP X-Squad, Owerri to assist in the investigation process. The Imo State Police Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens.'' Okoye said

The Federal Ministry of Education on Monday announced that the new curriculum for basic education will commence across schools in the country by January 2025.

The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman who disclosed this in Abuja, at a stakeholders meeting on the implementation of the new curriculum, said the new curriculum for senior secondary education would also commence by September 2025.

Professor Mamman stated that the new curriculum will address problems of learning crises and employability as the new skills acquisition to be introduced will have a multiplier effect by equipping students with 21st-century skills.

'We Empathise With The Poor But Have No Option,’ Shettima Defends Govt’s Policies

Vice President Kashim Shettima. Credit: X/@stanleynkwocha_

Amid the hardship faced by Nigerians, the Federal Government says it empathises with the citizens, especially the poor.

The Vice President, Senator Shettima, stated this in Abuja on Monday during the 30th anniversary of the Nigerian Economic Summit.

He defended the economic policies of the current administration while highlighting steps taken by the government to improve the economy.

“Some of the policy decisions, the policy options available are painful, but they are almost inevitable,” Shettima said.

“My heart and the heart of President Bola Tinubu go to the Nigerian people. We empathise with what the poor and the young are going through in the Nigerian nation but we have no option.

“Some of these decisions are unpopular but the truth is most often the truth that men prepare not to hear.”

Growth Trajectory

After coming to power last year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu brought in reforms billed as a way to revive the economy and attract foreign investment.

However, Nigerians have seen fuel prices soar and inflation hit a three-decade high since Tinubu ended fuel subsidy and floated the naira currency.

Recently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) increased prices at the pump from around 610 naira per litre ($0.38) to 855 per litre or more.

Private suppliers already sold fuel at higher prices than the NNPC. Some were selling at 1,200 naira per litre.

The price increase came a day after NNPC acknowledged it was struggling to maintain fuel supplies because of financial difficulties.

But the vice president said the nation’s growth trajectory has been volatile, stressing that the economy is reliant on oil revenue.

“Like many other nations, Nigeria has experienced significant economic problems over the past few years. The challenges have been global as well as domestic, ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic and fluctuation of oil prices to internal security issues, inflation and structural weaknesses in our economy.

“Nigeria’s growth trajectory has been volatile, heavily dependent on oil revenue and unable to create enough jobs,” he said.

Gallant operatives of the Nigeria Police, have arrested a man linked to a sinister organ harvesting syndicate in Imo State.

Finally, NFF pulls Eagles out of Libya clash

l

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has pulled the Super Eagles out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya on Tuesday.

This follows a frustrating 12-hour ordeal at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya, where the team has been stranded since their arrival on Sunday afternoon.

The Nigerian delegation, en route to Benghazi for the crucial match, encountered unexpected difficulties when their chartered aircraft was diverted mid-flight to Al Abraq, a small airport primarily used for hajj operations.

After their arrival, the team was left stranded without assistance from the Libyan Football Federation, which failed to arrange any transportation.

In a statement  on Monday, the NFF explained that the Super Eagles were stuck in the airport for over 12 hours, unable to reach their hotel in Benghazi, located three hours away.

The NFF stated that the players have decided to withdraw from playing the match and arrangements were being made to fly the team back to Nigeria.

The statement reads: “The delegation of Nigeria to Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya still remained at the Al Abraq Airport 12 hours after landing in Libya.

“The chartered ValueJet aircraft was, strangely and in a dangerous manner, diverted to the small airport away from Benghazi just as the pilot was completing his approach to the Benghazi Airport.

“We understand the Al Abraq International Airport is only used for hajj operations. Fatigued players and officials have remained nonplussed as the host Libyan Football Federation failed to send any reception team or even vehicles to take the delegation members from the airport to their hotel, said to be 3 hours away in Benghazi.

“The NFF made arrangements for separate vehicles for the team but the plan was unhinged by the diversion of the aircraft. Players have resolved not to play the match any longer as NFF officials are making plans to fly the team back home.”

My Take

The NFF has done the right thing to pull out of the game and the next right thing now is to lodge a formal protest on that with CAF and FIFA. The  Libyans, clearly overstepped the bounds.

Temporary marriages in Indonesia spark outrage as rural women become $500 brides for foreign tourists

Poor young women in rural areas are becoming temporary wives to foreign male visitors, receiving a bride price in return, leading to online outrage.

According to the South China Morning Post, in Puncak, a tourist destination in western Indonesia known for attracting Middle Eastern tourists, local agencies arrange these marriages between male visitors and local women.

After a brief wedding ceremony, the women are expected to handle household duties and engage in sexual relations before the men leave and dissolve the marriage.

A woman using the alias Cahaya shared with the Los Angeles Times that she has been married at least 15 times to Middle Eastern tourists since she was 17.

She typically earns between $300 and $500 per marriage, after the agency takes its cut, and uses the money to cover rent and care for her sick grandparents.

Now 28, she keeps her involvement in these marriages secret by telling her friends and family that she works as a housekeeper. She even lies to her boyfriend, deleting incriminating messages to hide the truth. "It's all torture," she admitted. "All I had in mind, every time, was I wanted to go home."

Another woman, Nisa, who had entered into over 20 temporary marriages, left the practice after marrying an Indonesian immigration officer. She now has two sons and vows never to return to her former life.

These temporary marriages are not legally recognized in Indonesia, as they conflict with the country's marriage laws, which are meant to support long-term, stable relationships. Violating these laws can lead to fines, imprisonment, and social or religious repercussions.

After Chinese media covered this practice, it ignited discussions on Weibo, with one commenter suggesting that to change the women's circumstances, "they need to be empowered through education and skills to become self-sufficient."

2025: Economic Hardship Will Triple - Primate Ayodele reveals

According to reports, Primate Elijah Ayodele, the Leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has issued a stark warning about the economic future of Nigeria, predicting increased hardship in 2025.

In a statement, Ayodele emphasized that without urgent government intervention, citizens may resort to revolt due to mounting frustrations over economic struggles.

The statement, communicated through his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, painted a bleak picture of the current state of the nation.

"Nigerians are suffering, but it will bite harder next year unless the government does what is expected of it," Ayodele cautioned.

He asserted that the government's failure to adequately address pressing economic issues has set the stage for an impending crisis.

Ayodele highlighted that the predicted economic challenges would not only intensify but could also lead to a significant backlash from the populace.

"The hardship is coming up and will bite Nigeria hard next year," he stated, underlining the urgency for government action.

He warned that the severity of the economic situation could triple compared to current conditions, urging government officials to heed the warning and act decisively.

"Economic hardship will be times three of what we are experiencing now next year; the government must be careful so that the citizens will not revolt."

The Primate's remarks reflect growing discontent among citizens, who have been grappling with rising inflation, unemployment, and deteriorating living standards.

Many Nigerians are already feeling the pinch, and Ayodele's predictions suggest that the situation could escalate dramatically if no measures are taken.

"In economic terms, we are looking at a kind of economic blackout," Ayodele asserted, suggesting that the consequences of inaction could lead to a complete breakdown in economic stability.

The potential for civil unrest looms large, and the Primate urged the government to prioritize the welfare of its citizens to avert a crisis.

Ayodele's comments come at a time when various sectors in Nigeria are experiencing significant challenges, from the agricultural industry to essential services.

The call for action resonates with the sentiments of many who feel abandoned by the government amid ongoing struggles.

As the country approaches a pivotal year, the pressure mounts on the Nigerian government to take proactive steps to mitigate the anticipated economic downturn.

Primate Ayodele's forewarnings serve as a clarion call for both leaders and citizens to engage in meaningful dialogue and action to secure a more stable future.

My Take

I think it is time to start taking Primate Ayodele's prophecies seriously.  He has been spot on, lately.

Teenage North Korean defector shares horrific story of life

Noh Jin-hae, a North Korean teenage defector, shares her story back in North Korea during a forum hosted by South Korea's unification ministry, in a hotel in Seoul. Courtesy of Ministry of Unification

A North Korean teenage defector on has shared her horrific story of life in the reclusive regime during a forum hosted by South Korea's unification ministry.

"I wear makeup and go out here in South Korea, but my friends in North Korea can't even wash properly, let alone wear makeup. Some friends smell because they can't bathe, but we live understanding each other," Noh Jin-hae recalled.

The 16-year-old girl, who defected from North Korea in 2019, recalled her harsh life in the North, a day before the International Day of the Girl, declared by the United Nations to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

Although Noh had a relatively affluent life in North Korea thanks to her father, she explained that showering was a near luxury, with the whole family having to share water fetched from outside.

"After school, some friends would go to the mountains to gather plants or sell them," she recalled.

Noh expressed her frustration with life in North Korea, sharing how students were forced to clean the statues of national founder Kim Il-sung in freezing cold weather.

In contrast, she enjoys being able to shower, wear makeup and freely wear clothes with English writing in South Korea.

Noh and her mother were featured in a 2023 documentary film called "Beyond Utopia," which covers their journey escaping from North Korea through China, Vietnam, and Laos to reach South Korea.

The meeting also brought together Vice Unification Minister Kim Soo-kyung and female foreign diplomats stationed here. (Yonhap)

Saudi Arabia slams Israeli on plan to turn UNRWA’s Jerusalem HQ into apartments

Saudi Arabia condemns “in the strongest terms” Israel’s decision to turn the Jerusalem headquarters of the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency into apartments.

Last week, the Israel Land Authority said it was preparing plans to turn the Ma’alot Dafna complex into 1,440 housing units, after telling UNRWA it must evacuate the premises.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry notes in an English-language statement: “The Kingdom rejects the continued blatant Israeli violations of international laws and resolutions…and its systematic political and military targeting of the United Nations agencies and its relief organizations.

“The Kingdom also rejects the continued endangerment of the lives of relief workers, expressing its support for UNRWA in its humanitarian mission to provide relief to Palestinian refugees.”

Israel has long pushed for UNRWA’s closure, arguing that it helps perpetuate the conflict with the Palestinians, and has stepped up such efforts since Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attacks.

Libya frustrates Super Eagles

Nigeria’s senior male football team is currently stranded in Libya, where it is to play the second leg of the AFCON 2025 Qualifier game.

Following Libya’s 1-0 loss to Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Friday, both teams were expected to face off again in Benina, their fourth Group D match.

The Super Eagles had departed for Libya on Sunday afternoon, but according to reports from the camp of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), an hour to landing at Benghazi, their destination, the Nigerian aircraft was diverted to Al Abraq, a city which is more than two hours drive from Benghazi.

The players and officials will now travel by road to Benghazi, the location for the return fixture.

Videos released by the NFF on Sunday night showed Nigerian players and officials trying to resolve the issue at a Libyan airport.

The Libyan authorities failed to provide transportation for the Super Eagles to get to their destination, forcing the NFF to make alternative plan, which was reportedly frustrated by their host.

The airport gate was said to have been locked to prevent the bus from entering.

“The tactics is targeted at frustrating the boys and wearing them out ahead of the game. They want to make it difficult for them to prepare for the match,” an insider who spoke off the record told Daily Trust late Sunday.

With one point, Libya are currently at the bottom of Group D topped by Super Eagles which have seven points followed by Benin Republic (six) and Rwanda (two).

This matter should be reported to CAF and FIFA officially so that Libya FA can be penalized or suspended indefinitely.

Nigerian arrested in South Africa for defrauding woman of R3 million

 By LindaIkejiblog

A 39-year-old Nigerian national, Gabriel Okori was remanded in custody for theft and fraud after his arrest in connection with an R3 million romance scam in South Africa.

Okori appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday, October 7, 2024, after he was arrested in Cape Town by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, assisted by the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement and a private security company.

"The complainant in the matter alleges that she met what she thought was a white male on Facebook by the name of Mark Hermanus, the two exchanged cellphone numbers and began chatting on instant messaging (WhatsApp),” said Gauteng spokesperson for the Hawks, Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela.

“While the pair were getting to know each other, ‘Mark Hermanus’ informed the complainant that his son was sick and asked the complainant to lend him money for his son’s medical bills."

The Hawks said the woman kept giving “Mark Hermanus” money, and the bill escalated to over R3 million.

The man promised he would pay her back, once he had paid all his son’s medical bills. However, he never paid back the money.

“The matter was reported to the Hawks’ serious commercial crime investigation (unit), which led to the arrest of the suspect who was traced and identified as Gabriel Okori, a Nigerian national in Cape Town on Thursday, October 3,” said Mavimbela.

“Okori made his first appearance before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the matter was postponed to October 14.”

My Take

This  wicked man deserves to rot in jail after refunding the money. The nonsense has got to stop,  folks. People should stop being fraudulent. It doesn't have any good effect because one day the fraudster will be caught. This is utterly wrong and disgusting. To those 'fake puritanical' Nigerians, please before you conclude he is Igbo make sure it is true because his name Okori doesn't seem to be Igbo.

Sinner Wins Shanghai Masters To Deny Djokovic 100th Career Title

World number one Jannik Sinner defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 on Sunday to win the Shanghai Masters.

Sinner took a crucial break in the fourth game of the second set to defeat the Serb in 1hr 37min and deny him a 100th career singles title.

“He was just too good today, too strong, too fast,” Djokovic said after the match.

Sinner said it was a “very special day”, saluting his opponent as a “legend” who kept playing “incredible tennis… year after year”.

In a nod to former Djokovic rival Roger Federer, who was watching from the stands, the 23-year-old joked: “There are legends everywhere, I just try to keep up a little bit.”

Facing off before an impassioned crowd, neither player blinked in the first set, unable to break the other’s serve.

Sinner quickly took control in the tiebreak, breaking Djokovic’s serve on the first point and going 5-1 up.

The Serb steadied himself but then netted a volley to bring up set point at 6-3.

Sinner failed to convert initially but didn’t miss the second time behind serve.

The next key moment came in the fourth game of the second set when Sinner was up 40-15 on Djokovic’s serve.

Djokovic saved one break point with a fiery ace but couldn’t stop a superb forehand down the line from Sinner that saw him pull ahead.

All that remained was for the Italian to hold his nerve, hitting an ace to finish the match and claim the title.

 ‘Tough year’

Sinner’s victory is the latest triumph in a formidable season, in which he has won two Grand Slams and retained the top spot in the rankings since June.

But it is also a year that has seen him embroiled in controversy after he twice tested positive for a banned steroid in March.

In August, the International Tennis Integrity Agency accepted Sinner’s explanation that the drug entered his system unintentionally when his physiotherapist used a spray containing it to treat a cut, then provided massage and sports therapy to the player.

However, the World Anti-Doping Agency said last month it would appeal against the decision to clear him of wrongdoing and was seeking a ban of up to two years.

That news came as Sinner was contesting the China Open, where he lost in the final to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who was also watching from the stands on Sunday.

“This year has been very, very tough for me… At points I lost a little bit of smile,” Sinner said on Sunday.

“It’s never easy to play in these kind of circumstances,” he added.

“I feel like I’m strong when I go on the court trying to not think about it… When I wake up I try to focus on every single (match or practice) I do, but then of course I have moments when I think about it which is not comfortable.”

Djokovic said Sinner played “the big points better” and “deserved to win”.

The 37-year-old said that getting a 100th title was “not a live-or-die type of goal”, but he would keep trying.

Djokovic became the last man standing from tennis’ golden era after Rafael Nadal announced his retirement this week and said that, despite the loss, he was pleased with his performance in Shanghai.

“I played pretty good, which gives me, I guess, a reason to believe that I can still play with these guys that are the best in the world at this level,” he said.

“As long as that’s the case, I guess I’ll still feel the need to keep on competing and the motivation to be out there.”

Hurricane Milton leaves path of destruction across Florida, at least 23 dead

 By CBS News

What to know about Hurricane Milton

Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, Wednesday night as a Category 3 storm.

At least 23 people died from the storm, officials confirmed to CBS News.

Milton moved across the Florida peninsula Thursday and over the Atlantic Ocean.

More than 1.3 million customers were without power in Florida on Saturday, according to utility tracker Find Energy.

Family purchased Siesta Key dream home 2 days before Helene struck, followed by Milton

CBS News flew over Siesta Key, just west of Sarasota, with the Florida National Guard Friday, where Milton made landfall Wednesday night as a Category 3 hurricane. From above the devastation seemed limitless, a vast landscape of twisted metal and debris, marking the heartbreaking toll of back-to-back hurricanes.

Two days before Helene struck, Isabella McGovern's family purchased their dream home in Siesta Key after saving up for years. Now the home is gutted, with mud inside and their new furniture sitting outside.

"This was all from the first hurricane, because anything the water touches, you have to strip because of the mold," McGovern told CBS News.

And down the street, guard troops were handing out lifelines in the form of cleaning supplies, tarps and water, while the McGoverns wonder whether to stay.

"We can't afford to, you know, build a house all over again," McGovern said. "So, we were thinking, if anything, you know, refurnish it, make it look nice. And in the next two to three years, put it back in the market."

Rare flood hits parts of Sahara desert in decades

By CBS News

A rare deluge of rainfall left blue lagoons of water amid the palm trees and sand dunes of the Sahara desert, nourishing some of its driest regions with more water than they had seen in decades.

Southeastern Morocco's desert is among the most arid places in the world and rarely experiences rain in late summer.

The Moroccan government said two days of rainfall in September exceeded yearly averages in several areas that see less than 10 inches annually, including Tata, one of the areas hit hardest. In Tagounite, a village about 280 miles south of the capital, Rabat, more than 3.9 inches were recorded in a 24-hour period.

The storms left striking images of water gushing through the Saharan sands amid castles and desert flora. NASA satellites showed water rushing in to fill Lake Iriqui, a famous lake bed between Zagora and Tata that had been dry for 50 years.

According to NASA, such an occurrence is so rare in the region that a lake in Algeria, Sebkha el Melah, had only been filled six times from 2000-2021.

In desert communities frequented by tourists, 4x4s motored through the puddles and residents surveyed the scene in awe.

"It's been 30 to 50 years since we've had this much rain in such a short space of time," said Houssine Youabeb of Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology.

Such rains, which meteorologists are calling an extratropical storm, may change the course of the region's weather in months and years to come as the air retains more moisture, causing more evaporation and drawing more storms, Youabeb said.

Six consecutive years of drought have posed challenges for much of Morocco, forcing farmers to leave fields fallow and cities and villages to ration water.

The bounty of rainfall will likely help refill the large groundwater aquifers beneath the desert that are relied upon to supply water in desert communities. The region's dammed reservoirs reported refilling at record rates throughout September. However, it's unclear how far September's rains will go toward alleviating drought.

Water gushing through the sands and oases left more than 20 dead in Morocco and Algeria and damaged farmers' harvests, forcing the government to allocate emergency relief funds, including in some areas affected by last year's earthquake.

Netanyahu calls on U.N. peacekeepers to immediately withdraw from Lebanon

 By CBS News

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on United Nations peacekeepers to heed the Israeli military's warnings to evacuate Lebanon immediately as the fighting intensifies amid Israel's ground operation.

Israeli forces have repeatedly fired upon locations where first responders and U.N. peacekeepers were present since the start of the ground operation against Hezbollah. The military has accused the Iran-backed militant group of using ambulances to ferry fighters and weapons and says Hezbollah operates in the vicinity of the peacekeepers, without providing evidence.

On Sunday, the Lebanese Red Cross said paramedics were searching for casualties in the wreckage of a house destroyed by an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon when a second strike left four paramedics with concussions and damaged two ambulances.

It said the rescue operation had been coordinated with U.N. peacekeepers, who informed the Israeli side. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

Jagan Chapagain, who heads the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) called for rescuers to be protected.

"We have said it before and today we say it again: the Red Cross emblem must be respected under International Humanitarian Law," he said in a statement shared on X.

In recent days, Israeli strikes have wounded five peacekeepers.

In a video addressed to the U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has been banned from entering Israel, Netanyahu called for peacekeepers to heed Israel's warnings to evacuate, accusing them of "providing a human shield" to Hezbollah.

"We regret the injury to the UNIFIL soldiers and we are doing everything in our power to prevent this injury. But the simple and obvious way to ensure this is simply to get them out of the danger zone," he said

He added: "Mr. Secretary-General, get the UNIFIL forces out of harm's way. It should be done right now, immediately."

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has refused to leave its positions in southern Lebanon.

"There was a unanimous decision to stay because it's important for the UN flag to still fly high in this region, and to be able to report to the Security Council," UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti told AFP in an interview on Saturday.

Lebanon's Hezbollah, which is allied with Hamas, began firing rockets into Israel on Oct. 8, 2023 - a day after Hamas attacked Israel, starting the war in Gaza. The conflict dramatically escalated in September with a wave of Israeli strikes that killed Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and most of his senior commanders. Israel launched a ground operation into southern Lebanon earlier this month.

At least 2,255 people have been killed in Lebanon since the start of the conflict, including more than 1,400 people since September, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry, which does not say how many were Hezbollah fighters. At least 54 people have been killed in the rocket attacks on Israel, nearly half of them soldiers.

American soldiers to operate THAAD missile defense system in Israel - report

 By JERUSALEM POST

Adan Cazarez/Handout via REUTERS)

The decision would be implemented in an attempt to prepare for an Iranian response to an Israel strike.

American soldiers will reportedly send the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) air defense system to Israel in order to prepare for intercepting ballistic missiles, N12 reported on Saturday night.

According to the report, such a decision would prompt the US to station American soldiers in Israel to operate the THAAD system.

The decision to operate the THAAD US air defence system on Israeli soil would come in preparation for an expected Iranian response to Israel's anticipated retaliation strike on Iran, the N12 report noted.

Following the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also directed the deployment of the THAAD system to Israel, according to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD).

At the time, Austin also called for additional Patriot battalions to be deployed throughout the Middle East to increase force protection for US forces, the FDD added.

What is the THAAD system?

The THAAD system is considered the middle tier of the US ballistic missile defense and is a mobile system that "fires a hit-to-kill interceptor capable of defeating ballistic missiles inside and outside of the atmosphere," the FDD noted.

In 2019, the US sent additional capabilities to Saudi Arabia, which included the THAAD system, following an Iranian attack on Saudi Arabian oil facilities, the US Department of Defense said in an issued statement at the time.

In the statement, former defense secretary Dr. Mark T. Esper said that the decision was the "latest show of support" and that it involved some 3,000 US personnel. He also added that ongoing Iranian provocations at the time were the cause of an even larger support effort in the region.

Back in 2012, the United Arab Emirates attempted to acquire the THAAD system, as it requested the possible sale of the missiles for the estimated cost of $1.135 billion, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said.

The proposed sale was expected to strengthen the "UAE’s capability to counter current and future threats in the region and reduce dependence on US forces," the Defense Security Cooperation Agency added.

Israel has had a strict policy of keeping American soldiers from fighting Israel’s war on the ground and in the air. This would be a serious breach of that commitment.

Mortuary tax not meant to generate revenue – Enugu Govt

 Vanguard News

             Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah

The Enugu State Government says the Enugu Mortuary Tax is not meant to generate revenue but to discourage people from taking their dead ones to the mortuary.

The Executive Chairman, Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), Mr Emmanuel Nnamani, said this while reacting to the Mortuary Tax circular addressed to all the Mortuary Attendants in the state trending online.

According to the circular, ESIRS in line with the provisions of section 34 of the Birth, Deaths and Burials Law Cap 15, Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004, hereby approves the implementation of Mortuary tax.

“The sum of N40.00 only is to be paid by owners of a corpse once it was not buried within twenty-four hours. The amount continues to count on a daily basis.

“Kindly ensure that owners of corpses make the payments before collection of the corpses for burial and then remit same to the ESIRS in any commercial bank under the mortuary tax in Enugu State IGR Account,” the circular said.

Reacting to concerns raised Nnamani explained that the tax was not new to the state, adding that it was within the Enugu State Mortuary Tax Law which had been in existence for years.

He also alleged that some social media users changed the date on the circular to make it look like a new thing, clarifying that the amount to pay was only N40, not N40,000.

“It is an indirect tax paid by mortuary owners, not deceased family and it is just N40, not N40,000. Since its introduction, nobody has been denied burying their dead ones.

“It means that if corpse stays in the mortuary for 100 days the mortuary is expected to pay to state a sum of N4000.

“The tax is not meant to generate revenue but to discourage people from taking their dead ones to the mortuary all the time,” Nnamani stressed.

My Take

I support the Enugu State Government on the mortuary tax.

It is unfortunate that in Igboland, the burial of dead relatives has turned into elaborate and wasteful ceremonies even when the dead might have died because of deliberate neglect.

In addition, the terrible stories coming from many of these substandard mortuaries where they use only chemicals to preserve dead bodies are worrying.

Stories like selling of body parts, abuse of dead bodies by ritualists collaborating with the untrained mortuary attendants, selling of water used to bath dead bodies to witch doctors and ritualists are so disturbing and lend credence to this bold move by the Enugu State Government to stop such nonsense.

Kudos! To Governor Mbah.

Shocker! Zimbabwean Woman Gives Birth to Baby Boy But Wakes Up with Baby Girl

Chipinge Hospital baby swap (Image Credit: First Walkers)

Police Launch Investigation After Woman Gives Birth to a Baby Boy But Wakes Up with a Baby Girl Instead

In a shocking baby swap incident at Chipinge District Hospital, a new mother gave birth to a baby boy, only to discover the following morning that her child had been switched with a baby girl.

This unexpected hospital mix-up, which has stunned the Chipinge community, is now under investigation, with both the police and hospital authorities seeking answers.

Mother Discovers Baby Swap

According to Manica Post, Cynthia Masocha delivered a baby boy on September 21, 2024, at Chipinge District Hospital with the assistance of midwife Blessing Mutimbu.

According to hospital procedures, Mutimbu raised the newborn to confirm its sex, which Masocha verified as male.

Afterwards, the mother breastfed her son and rested for the night. However, to her disbelief, she discovered the next morning that the baby’s nappies revealed a girl instead of the boy she had given birth to.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I checked the nappies. I was sure I had a son, and the hospital records confirmed it,” Cynthia Masocha reportedly told authorities, stunned by the discovery.

Apparently, three women had given birth at the hospital that day, but only Ms. Masocha had delivered a male child. Authorities are now conducting DNA tests to determine the paternity and investigate how the swap occurred.
