Replace faulty equipment in seven days, FG orders Discos

The Federal Government has ordered electricity distribution companies to replace weak distribution networks in their franchise areas within seven days.

It gave the directive through the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency, stressing that this latest order comes after a two-month notice earlier issued to the Discos to implement the necessary changes.

The NEMSA Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Tukur Aliyu, disclosed this to journalists on Monday at the 2024 Customer Service Week in Abuja.

He explained that following the discovery that most of the distribution networks were old and weak, the Discos were directed to do the necessary upgrade to ensure the safe distribution of electricity in the country.

My Take

If will be a miracle and a wonder if the inefficient DISCOS comply with this directive.

I have said it time after time that the so-called DISCOS are only exploiting Nigerians through estimated bills and poor power supply with the tacit support of the authorities and I stand to be corrected.

For instance, the issue of supply of prepaid meters to electricity consumers in Nigeria, remains intractable and the authorities seem unable to deal with these derelict and irritating DISCOS over that.
