Champions League 2024/25, all you need to know

The competition will enter a “Swiss format”, which means that a giant league table will determine the outcome of the first phase rather than group stages.

36 teams will compete in this stage, with the top eight automatically qualifying for the round of 16, those ranked ninth to 24th will face off in a two-legged tie to determine the winner and those who finish 25th and below will be eliminated.

No teams will be dropping from the Champions League into the Europa League through this format.

If teams finish on the same points, a series of tie-breakers will determine who will finish above one another, which is as follows: goal difference, goals scored and then toughest path – which determines the points accumulated by the other teams in a team’s draw.

How does the Champions League 2024/25 draw work?

Much like the group stages, teams will be drawn based on their coefficient ranking after being separated into different pots.

Teams will play eight different opponents, split evenly across home and away ties, throughout the league phase.

Out of the four seeding pots, two teams from each of those will be played to reach the eight matches required.

Which pot is Arsenal in for the Champions League draw?

Arsenal will be placed in pot two of the Champions League draw, due to their coefficient rankings in European competition.

Can English teams draw each other in the Champions League?

During the league phase, English teams won’t be able to face each other in the Champions League.

This means that Arsenal won’t face off against Premier League rivals Manchester City, Liverpool or Aston Villa until the later rounds of the competition.

Which teams have qualified for the Champions League?

The two-legged ties will be played on August 20/21 and 27/28, with those sides being filtered into pots three and four.

When are the Champions League knockout phase draws?

Knockout round play-offs: 31 January 2025

Round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final: 21 February 2025

When is the Champions League 2024/25 final?

The 2024/25 Champions League final will take place on May 31, 2025, with two teams battling it out to earn a chance at lifting the trophy.

Where will the Champions League 2024/25 final be held?

When the Champions League final rolls around in late May, the two finalists will be making their way to Germany to earn a shot at winning the competition.

Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena will be the host stadium for the tie, having last held the final in the 2012 edition of the contest.
