More voters convinced not to vote for Harris after Swift's endorsement: Poll

20 per cent of respondents said they were "somewhat" or "much less likely" to vote for Harris after Swift's endorsement, according to a fresh YouGov poll

Pop star Taylor Swift's endorsement of US Vice President Kamala Harris may have turned more voters away than attracted, a report in the NY Post, citing YouGov poll data has claimed.

The poll found that eight per cent of voters were "somewhat" or "much more likely" to be convinced to vote for Harris after Swift's nod. However, 20 per cent of respondents said they were "somewhat" or "much less likely" to vote for Harris.

The majority of the people (66 per cent) said Swift's endorsement made no difference on how they would cast their ballot in the November poll. 41 per cent said the singer should not publically speak about politics while 38 per cent said she should make such political endorsements.

Immediately after the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Harris concluded on Tuesday (Sep 10), Swift released a statement on her social media accounts, pledging her allegiance to the Democrat leader.

“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” Swift wrote on Instagram to her 283 million followers.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”

Swift also took a potshot at Republican vice president candidate JD Vance by signing off the endorsement as 'Childless Cat Lady", in reference to the Ohio senator's controversial remark.

Vance in a 2021 interview with former Fox News host, Tucker Carlson, had said that the US was being run "by a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too".

While it remains unclear if Swift's endorsement would translate into votes, it certainly led to a flood of traffic on the voter registration website. After her announcement, 337,826 visitors visited vote.gov website and registered to cast their ballot.

As for Harris, her win in the debate did not make much difference to the poll predictions. She continued to maintain a narrow lead over Trump, as per YouGov, with improvement in certain indicators noted which could point towards later gains.
