Putin               Gazprom facility in Russia Demands payment in roubles to shield it from sanctions EU denounces gas cut-off as 'blackmail' Russia halted gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland on Wednesday for rejecting its demand to pay in roubles, taking direct aim at European economies in its toughest retaliation so far against international sanctions over the war in Ukraine. The step was denounced by European leaders as "blackmail", and comes as European countries have joined the United States in ramping up arms shipments to help Ukraine fend off a new Russian assault in the east. Ukraine reported on Wednesday that Russian troops had made gains in several villages there. Russia reported a number of blasts on its side of the border, including a blaze at an arms depot, which Kyiv called "karma". Moscow says the gas cut-off is t...

Possible Impacts of e-Naira

Image
An Editorial by the Nigerian Academic Excellence Magazine On Monday, October 25, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari launched the eNaira at the State House in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, after a previous plan to unveil the digital currency on October 1 was put on hold. “We have become the first country in Africa and one of the first in the world to introduce a digital currency to our citizens,” President Buhari said at the official launch. eNaira is the digital form of cash and is a direct liability on the Central Bank of Nigeria while the customer deposits are direct liabilities on the financial institutions. eNaira wallet, on the other hand, is a digital storage that holds the eNaira. It is held and managed on a distributed ledger. The eNaira wallet is required to access, hold and use eNaira. Nigeria is one of the five countries in the world to develop an official digital currency and the country's CBDC pilot is now the second largest behind China’s digital yuan, and aims to di...

FLASHBACK: Atlanta 1996 - Men, greatest Olympic match ever played.

Image
Nigeria made Olympic football history by becoming the first African and non-European and South American team to win the gold medal. While the football tournament remained primarily an Under-23 competition, each of the 16 competing countries were allowed to use as many as three overage players in a compromise between FIFA and the International Olympic Committee. The Nigerians, whom many observers predicted would be the first African side to win a World Cup, showed so much promise and expectations over the previous decade. They won the 1985 Under-16 World Tournament and finished second in 1987. They took third and second, respectively, at the 1985 and 1989 World Youth Championships. But they could never break the final barrier at the higher levels. Nigeria, coached by Dutchman Johannes Bonfrere, started their path to the final with a 1-0 victory over Hungary and a 2-0 win over Japan before completing the first round with a 1-0 loss to Brazil. The Africans then shut down Mexico and ...

Mobile Nuclear Reactor: Japan’s Mitsubishi To Commercialize technology by 2030s

Image
Following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant catastrophe in 2011, Japan is moving ahead to leverage a new technological approach to satisfy the country’s future energy needs. Leading the effort is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which  intends to build and commercialize nuclear reactors small enough to be transported on trucks by the end of the decade, to capitalize on the demand for non-carbon emitting energy, according to Nikkei Asia. The microreactors, which will be 3 meters tall and 4 meters wide, will weigh less than 40 tons. The reactor and power generation equipment will rest inside a container truck, making it possible to transport it to remote or disaster-stricken locations. The microreactors’ maximum output will be 500 kilowatts or one-twentieth of the capacity of normal nuclear reactors that generate more than one gigawatt. According to the report, each microreactor will require tens of millions of dollars, significantly less than the $6 billion or more than a...
